Citigrass (left to right): James Kerr (Dobro, Vocals), Sandy Israel (Founder, Bandleader, Banjo, Vocals), Noah Chase (Mandolin, Vocals), Lea Latella (Vocals), Kenji Bunch (Fiddle, Vocals), Tim Kiah (Bass, Vocals)

Citigrass was born in the year 2000 in NYC. Sandy’s vision was to build a band with bluegrass instrumentation but a more contemporary sound that could entertain a modern, rock-oriented audience.

The term “Urban Bluegrass” describes the sound. Citigrass put on high energy performances with big vocal harmonies and hot pickin’. Set lists ranged from straight-up Bill Monroe to Madonna to middle-eastern-inflected originals. Sandy led Citigrass through more than 600 performances and three albums, playing banjo all the way.

Citigrass played many festivals, theaters, and nightclubs, but Californians would be most familiar with the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park, which they had the honor of playing in 2010.

Please feel free to enjoy or even download the music from the Citigrass CDs. They are also available on iTunes and Amazon, but they’re free here for local folks interested in hearing Sandy’s work.
